Articles and Educational Writing
Freelance Writing
Freelance assignments provide the perfect vehicle for exploring topics I am interested in, from community mapping to the myriad ways in which organisms use mud. I have written for a variety of publications, including Hakai Magazine, Canadian Geographic, The Georgia Straight, SBC Surf, WILD, Canadian Wildlife, and Beautiful British Columbia.
Educational Writing
My experience writing clear, yet engaging, text segues well into educational writing. Over the past decade I have worked with several publishers on teachers' resource books, textbooks, and distance learning materials. This work includes working as a developmental editor and writing units and chapters for science and math textbooks. Past clients include: McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Pearson Educational, and Weigl Educational Publishers.
While working at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre I helped create a five-unit educational publication called Ocean News. This included a newsmagazine for students and a teachers' guide for each unit. I also co-wrote Our Oceans, Ourselves: Marine Biodiversity for Educators for the Biodiversity Convention Office, Ottawa and World Wildlife Fund and designed and taught a workshop that went with this publication.
